What is SASUF?
SASUF (the ’South Africa-Sweden University Forum’) is an internationalization project that aims to strengthen the relationship between Sweden and South Africa. The project aims to create opportunities for researchers to collaborate with other researchers in both countries.
SASUF is based on a network of 37 universities (12 in Sweden and 25 in South Africa). Based on the four thematic areas:
- Sustainable Health
- Green Transition
- Migration and Urbanisation
- Democracy, Social Justice, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems
Which the partner universities have collectively agreed on, researchers can combine and expand their research projects through collaboration. The projects should generally benefit both countries in various ways.
Researchers, teachers, and students within the project work to develop solutions to the challenges posed by the UN’s global sustainability goals and Agenda 2030. Within the organization, there are several opportunities to make connections and expand one’s network.
SASUF has recently presented the upcoming project phase, SASUF+, which will run from August 2025 to August 2028. During this phase, the focus will, among other things, be on further increasing student influence. The goal is to shape and support the next generation of researchers. By actively involving them in all aspects of SASUF+, the project hopes to inspire students to engage in research and drive social change.
A variety of events are coming up that you, as a student, can take part in. Read more here.
But what opportunities are there for students in SASUF?
Within SASUF, a student network has emerged that aims for meaningful student engagement.
After an evaluation period in 2019, students expressed increased interest in participating in and influencing the project. Shortly thereafter, a decision was made to particularly focus on strengthening and engaging future researchers in the next phase. Today, all universities within the project have a student representative who is involved in and supports the network.
“It’s so fun that the student network has emerged […] it is by students for students.” / Helin Bäckman Kartal, project manager SASUF
The purpose of the student network is primarily to create a platform for students who are interested in meeting other students and who are curious about internationalization. Curiosity is what drives the network forward.
There are many opportunities to participate in joint discussions, in so-called Coffee Break Sessions, which are organized by the students themselves. The topics of conversation are many and varied, with education, research, culture, and sustainability from a Sweden-South Africa perspective as common themes. The hope is that the conversations will be educational and strengthen the relationships between students. Perhaps the insights and lessons from the meetings can be useful in academic contexts? Or maybe even result in a friend?
“Suddenly you might be doing your thesis in South Africa? […] There are quite a few opportunities where you actually just need a friend as a contact to move forward.” / Helin Bäckman Kartal, project manager, SASUF
Mariana Flysjö was recently elected as Malmö University’s student representative within SASUF. She is looking forward to her new position and welcomes questions about the network. You who wish to become a member, are welcome to contact her at mariananomundo@gmail.com.

Other than the Coffee Break Sessions, there are other committees within the network that you as a student can join!
The Media- and Marketing Committee helps to make sure the network is visible and reaches the right audiences. The committee creates posters and other materials for events and manages the network’s social media channels and LinkedIn page.
To boost engagement, the committee is working on ideas such as monthly update posts or a digital newsletter to keep everyone in the loop. Do you have an idea or want to contribute with your thoughts, don’t hesitate to apply!
In a close collaboration with the rest of the network the Framework Review Committee leads the work of updating the network’s goals, purpose, and key themes. By gathering input from members and making sure a wide range of voices are heard, the committee is working towards a network that evolves and is in line with the members’ wishes.
The committee also follows up on how well the goals are being met and helps to ensure that the framework stays practical, inclusive, and driven by students.
The Academic Collaboration Committee focuses on creating medium- and long-term initiatives that support academic collaboration, such as writing retreats and shared academic challenges. It also manages a research interest database that helps students connect with others working in similar fields.
In addition, the committee supports members in finding opportunities for publications and conference participation and organizes academic webinars or virtual symposiums that showcase student work from both South African and Swedish institutions.
Are you interested in shaping the future direction of the network? Or why not help to ensure the network’s visibility in Media- and Marketing Committee? Engage in one of the committees today!
